How to message a recruiter on LinkedIn as a fresher (with templates)
A short, specific message to the right person gets more replies than a long one to everyone. Here's what to write.

Applying online and waiting is slow. A short message to the right person on LinkedIn can get your resume looked at sooner, or get you a referral. Most people won't reply, and that's normal. A few will, and one reply can change your search.
Fix your profile first
People check your profile before replying. Make sure it has:
- A clear photo and a headline like "2026 B.Tech CSE | Java, SQL, Spring Boot | Looking for fresher developer roles".
- Your projects, with a GitHub link if you have one.
- Skills that match the jobs you want.
Who to message
- Recruiters or talent acquisition people at the company. Search "talent acquisition" plus the company name.
- Employees in the team you want, especially recent freshers from your college. They remember how hard it was.
- Alumni from your college. Use the Alumni tab on your college's LinkedIn page.
Don't send the same message to 50 people in one company. Pick three or four.
Template 1: to a recruiter, about a specific job
Hi Ananya, I'm a 2026 B.Tech CSE graduate and I've applied for the Associate Software Engineer role (job ID 12345). I've built two Java and SQL projects, including a library app now used in my college. Could you let me know if my profile fits this role? Thank you for your time.
Template 2: asking an employee for a referral
Hi Karthik, I saw you joined Company X as a fresher last year. I'm a 2026 batch student applying for their Graduate Engineer role. Would you be open to referring me? I can send my resume and the job link. If not, any tip on the hiring process would also help a lot.
Template 3: to an alumnus
Hi Sneha, I'm a final-year student from your college (2026 batch, ECE). I'm moving towards software testing and saw you work in QA at Company Y. Could I ask you two quick questions about how you got your first role?
What makes a message work
- Under 300 characters for connection notes, and short for messages too.
- Name the exact job, or say exactly what you want: a referral, a quick tip, or a profile check.
- One proof point, like a project or a test you cleared.
- Make it easy to say yes. Offer to send your resume and the job link.
Follow up once
If there's no reply after a week, send one short follow-up:
Hi Ananya, just following up on my message about the Associate Software Engineer role. Thanks!
After that, move on. Don't send daily messages.
What never to send
- "Sir, please give me job" or "Kindly check my profile" with nothing else.
- Your phone number with a request to call you.
- Long messages with your life story.
- Messages on Instagram or WhatsApp to someone you found on LinkedIn.
Stay safe
Recruiters can contact you too, and some fake ones use LinkedIn. A real recruiter will never ask you to pay for a job, a test or training. Check the person's profile, their company email and the job on the company's careers site. See Spotting fake fresher job offers, or paste a message into our scam checker.
Find the roles to ask about
- Open fresher jobs, each with the company link where we found one.
- 2026 batch and 2027 batch jobs.
- Applied 50 times, no reply? What to change
