HR interview questions for freshers, and how to answer them
HR rounds are mostly about whether you'll join, stay and fit in. Honest, short answers work best.

The HR round decides fewer offers than the technical round, but it still rejects people. The interviewer mainly wants to know three things: will you join, will you stay, and will you work well with others.
Answer honestly and keep each answer short, about 30 seconds. Below are the questions freshers get most, what HR is really checking, and a sample answer to adapt.
Tell me about yourself
They want a short, clear introduction. Use a 4-part answer: who you are, your skills, one project, and why this role. See the full guide: Tell me about yourself for freshers.
What are your strengths?
What they check: whether you know yourself and can back it up.
I'm consistent. In my final year I practised coding problems every day for four months, and that's how I cleared my first online test.
Pick one or two strengths and give proof for each.
What is your weakness?
What they check: honesty, and whether you are working on it.
I used to hesitate to ask questions in group projects. Now I write my doubts down and ask them in our daily check-in, which has helped.
Pick a real weakness that isn't central to the job. Avoid "I'm a perfectionist".
Why should we hire you?
I have the basics this role needs, Java and SQL, and I've used them in a real project. I learn fast when I'm stuck, and I'm ready to join on the date you need.
Why do you want to join this company?
What they check: that you're not applying blindly. Read the company's careers page for five minutes before the interview and mention one real thing, like the kind of projects or training they offer.
Are you willing to relocate?
What they check: whether you'll join wherever they place you. Big IT companies often place freshers in any city. If you can move, say yes clearly. If you truly can't, say so politely now, because refusing after the offer can cost you the job.
Are you okay with night shifts or rotational shifts?
Same as relocation: answer honestly. Some support and testing roles have shifts. Ask what the shift pattern usually is.
Are you okay with a service agreement or bond?
Don't say yes without knowing the terms. Ask: how long it lasts, how much you pay if you leave early, and whether they keep your original documents. See Service agreements and bonds in IT jobs.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I'd like to be a strong developer who others on the team rely on, and maybe leading a small module by then.
Show you plan to grow there, not leave in six months.
What salary do you expect?
For big fresher drives, the pay is fixed for the role, so say:
I'm happy with the standard package for this role.
For smaller companies, check what similar fresher roles pay on job pages, then give a range. Never let anyone charge you a "training" or "joining" fee. That is a scam. See Spotting fake fresher job offers.
Do you have any questions for us?
Always ask one or two:
- What does a fresher usually work on in the first three months?
- How long is the training, and where does it happen?
- When can I expect to hear about the next step?
Last tips
- Keep your documents ready: marksheets, ID and certificates, as soft copies too.
- Join a video call five minutes early, with your camera on and a quiet room.
- Be the same person in every answer. HR notices when your story changes.
