"Tell me about yourself" for freshers: a simple answer with examples
It's almost always the first question. A clear 1-minute answer sets the tone for the whole interview.
Last updated 2 Nov 2026
"Tell me about yourself" is the first question in most fresher interviews, technical or HR. The interviewer isn't asking for your life story. They want to hear, in about a minute, who you are, what you can do and why you're in the room.
A good answer also helps you steer the interview. Whatever you mention, they will often ask about next, so mention what you know well.
The 4-part structure
Keep it to 60 to 90 seconds. Say it in this order:
- Who you are, in one line: your degree, branch, college and graduating year.
- What you can do: two or three skills that match the job, like Java, SQL or testing.
- Proof: one project or internship, with what you built and one result.
- Why this role: one honest line on why this job or company fits you.
Then stop. Don't add hobbies or family details unless they ask.
Sample answer 1: software developer role
I'm Priya, a B.Tech Computer Science student from Pune, graduating in 2026. I mainly work in Java and SQL, and I've learned the basics of Spring Boot. In my final-year project I built a library management app with two classmates. I wrote the backend APIs and the database design, and we got it working for our college library with about 200 books. I enjoy building things that people actually use, which is why I applied for this developer role.
Sample answer 2: no internship, non-CS branch
I'm Rahul, a 2025 B.E. Electronics graduate from Coimbatore. During college I moved towards software and learned Python and basic SQL through online courses. I built a small expense tracker in Python that reads my bank SMS exports and shows monthly spending. Since graduating I've been practising coding problems every day and learning testing basics. I'm applying for this QA role because I like finding why things break, and I want to start my career in IT.
Notice that neither answer apologises for being a fresher. Both talk about what was built.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading your resume aloud. They have it. Pick the best parts and explain them.
- Going over 2 minutes. Practise with a timer.
- Listing ten skills. Name two or three you can answer questions on. If you say "machine learning", expect an ML question next.
- Memorising word for word. Remember the 4 parts, not the sentences, so it sounds natural.
- Saying "I'm hardworking and a quick learner" with nothing to back it. Give the project instead.
- Talking badly about your college or a past internship.
How to practise
- Write your answer in the 4 parts, then cut it to about 150 words.
- Say it aloud five times. Record it on your phone once and listen back.
- Change part 4 for each company. One line about what that company does is enough.
- Prepare for the follow-ups: "Tell me more about that project" and "What was the hardest part?"
