Cognizant hiring process for freshers: GenC roles, rounds and preparation
Cognizant hires freshers into its GenC programme through an online test and an interview. Here's how the levels work and how to prepare.
Last updated 30 Oct 2026
Cognizant hires a large number of freshers in India, mostly into its GenC programme. The process is an online test, then an interview, with extra coding for the higher GenC levels.
Role names, dates and eligibility change from drive to drive, so use this guide as the map and the official notice as the rules.
The GenC levels
In recent years Cognizant has hired freshers into several levels, all under the GenC name:
- GenC: the main fresher level, with the largest intake.
- GenC Next: a higher level for people with stronger coding and project skills.
- GenC Elevate and GenC Pro: levels that have been used for specific skills and degrees.
Which levels a drive offers can change, so check the official notice. The offer letter states the pay for your level, so trust that figure over what you read online.
Where to apply
- Apply only through the Cognizant careers site or a link from it. Off-campus drives for a graduation year are announced there.
- Cognizant does not charge you to apply, take a test or join. If anyone asks for money, it's a scam. See Spotting fake fresher job offers.
- Test links and updates come by email. Check they come from Cognizant or the test platform named in the notice.
Who can apply
Each drive sets its own rules. They usually cover:
- Degree: typically B.E./B.Tech, M.E./M.Tech, MCA and some M.Sc. streams. Some levels also take B.Sc. or BCA graduates.
- Graduation year: the batch the drive is for.
- Marks, backlogs and gaps: a minimum score, no active backlogs at joining, and limits on education gaps.
Round 1: the online test
For GenC, the test usually covers:
- Quantitative ability: percentages, ratios, time and work, averages.
- Logical reasoning: series, arrangements, puzzles, data sufficiency.
- Verbal ability: grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension.
For GenC Next and the higher levels, expect a coding round too, usually problems in a language you choose, plus questions on your technical basics.
Round 2: the interview
If you clear the test, you get an interview, often online:
- Your projects: what you built, your part, the tools you used, what went wrong and how you fixed it.
- Basics: your main programming language, OOP, DBMS and SQL, and some operating system or networking basics.
- Simple coding: short problems on arrays and strings.
- HR: relocation, shifts, training and documents.
For GenC Next, expect deeper technical questions and more coding.
After selection: training and joining
- New hires usually go through a training programme before moving to a project. What you train in can depend on business needs, not only on your choice.
- Joining dates for big batches can take weeks or months. Keep applying until you have one in writing. See Offer letter but no joining date and the onboarding wait tracker.
A 3-week prep plan
- Week 1: quantitative and logical reasoning, 45 minutes a day, timed.
- Week 2: verbal practice daily. Revise OOP, DBMS and simple SQL queries.
- Week 3: one full mock test, then interview practice. For GenC Next, add daily coding on arrays, strings and hashing.
